Fright is coded in our genes. Vulnerability of existence is one of the strongest of fears. While at work, primarily as an employee, you will offer your labour force, knowledge, skills and principally your time in exchange for the salary. Salary is requisite for subsistence. Services and goods are acquired in exchange for money. Money is devoted to investments and provisions. The foregoing two are needed to material independence. Our subsistence will become jeopardised without material independence.

Prime Minister Victor Orban, underlined in his address that demographic trends were improving during the past years. In his assessment the Prime Minister pointed out the rate of growth the pregnancy indices achieved in the past years. According to him, this is owing to the family support scheme in effect.  Policy Agenda has examined the demographic figures and the steps of government to see whether any causal nexus exists between them.

The government keeps arguing that pensioners were protected from the drawbacks of the economic recession. Nevertheless it was this field exposed to the most extensive reforms during the past years. The KSH revealed the rate of subsistence level for 2013 publicly. Accordingly, a monthly income of at least 87,510 Forints was enough last year in Hungary for one to be able to “permanently satisfy the minimum needs for the conduct of life”. During the recent years it has become troublesome even for those with jobs to be able to achieve this living standard from their earnings. The Policy Agenda exhibits the actual tendency in this respect compared to the period preceding the economic recession.

The crisis has affected Hungarian economy and society to a considerable extent. This can be felt still and poverty is ever increasing. Policy Agenda has examined Hungary’s current situation compared to our competitors based on the figures published by OECD and the statistical office of the European Union (EUROSTAT). The problem of the foreing currency mortgage holders has come into the focus of public interest and as a result, into the focus of politics as well. The government has been looking for the narrow path where they are able to intervene both politically and economically. With the governing parties introducing the bill on the new constitution and facts and elements of the Széll Kálmán plan unfolding, a strong debate has flared up in Hungary on the question of tasks and responsibilities of the state in the improvement of the living standards of the social groups in need. During the last few years there have been more and more people to say that the Hungarian social benefit system is too very generous compared to the present state of the economy. In this analysis Policy Agenda is having a closer look at the allegation that it is much worth living on benefits than having a regular job.
