After the local elections, the support for Fidesz has started to decline spectacularly. A series of government failures and conflicts within the governing party have suddenly shaken the dominance that was believed to be unshakeable. The Prime Minister is clearly looking for solutions. Using the Political Impact Index, Policy Agenda has checked what cases are expected during the coming half-year, and which ones may deepen the crisis of the governing parties.

Some people think the speech of the Prime Minister at Tusnádfürdő (Baile Tusnad) means the start of a new era while others say “there’s nothing new in the sun”. Despite the unwritten law the third Orbán-government failed to have the Parliament accept its platform. Whereas the governing parties did not publish the election programme either, it is not easy to assess what we can expect in the following four years.Beyond the annual budget, the only document the government is obliged to make and that can serve as a compass is the convergence programme. The country has been divided into three parts in consideration of the results of the parliamentary elections. The forces between the governing parties and the parties composing the government changing association are balanced in Budapest. The left-wing parties, however, represent only the third force in the villages. In connection with this, Policy Agenda has asked company managers to tell their opinion on the economic policy of the recent four years and the changes they consider important. The company managers’ opinions are much divided regarding whether the government would be replaced.

The debate on the problem of people indebted in foreign currency has increased again because of the Constitutional Court’s decision. The problem of more than 230 thousand contracts affecting several thousands of families has been a question dividing the public opinion for several months.
